No more sharkfins!

Posted on Friday, 30 June 2000, 15: 33 GMT

Thai Airways International will stop serving shark fin soup on board of its Royal First class and Royal Executive Class (business class) services on all international flights. This is a contribution of THAI (TG) to its environmental policy. Another contribution to that policy from THAI is that they only serve coffee, cultivated in Royal Project farms. (See my page about HM the King for more details about Royal Projects).

Elephant died after eating rice...

Posted on Wednesday, 28 June 2000, 21: 27 GMT

On Sunday, 25 June 2000 a reletively young elephant died afer having been transported in a truck, filled with (raw) rice from the North to Bangkok. The elephant ate 50 kilos of rice from the truck, during his trip, and later had a drink of about 250 liters of water.
According to the Vet the rice had swollen in the poor animals stomach, after which he was not able to breathe properly, which caused him his life. The background of this story is as sad as the story itself. Many elephant owners do not know how to make money upcountry with their animals, now that they use more and more tools in agriculture. They go with their animal, that costs a lot of money for food- to Bangkok, hoping to be able to make money there. In this case that trip was fatal.
