My musical taste is very diverse: In fact I like all
kinds of good music. What do I call good?
In the first place I have always loved jazz music. And particularly "Traditional
Jazz". So far I did not find any good links about this kind
of music
***
The best general Jazz website I know is Jazz Web. It has -among other things- lots of good links.
***
There are many good pages about Ragtime music. Go to Warren Trachtman to find a lot of information and lots of MIDI files, either to play online or to download. See his links page for further browsing. I started there. You can also start on the Ragtime Home Page. That's a very good site too.
***
And don't forget to take a look at Oleg Mezjuev's Swedish Ragtime Page. He proves that good Ragtime Music is still being written right now in Sweden, among others by himself.
***
But Oleg is not the only person who is writing Ragtime
music nowadays: Also visit the site of Gary Thompson and listen to his
music.
***
Another interesting Ragtime site is the site by Mark Birnbaum. He has files to listen to, a store and much information about the Ragtime era.
In the first place go to the Classical Music Archives and you will find loads of Classical MIDI files to play online or to download. Another site with many Classical MIDI files is the Classical Piano Solo MIDI site.
If you love opera you either love or hate the works of Richard Wagner. Sadly the very extensive site about his life and works is no longer in the air. There still is a newsgroup, which seems to be the best source on the Internet now.
The most famous work by Wagner is Der Ring des Nibelungen. And still -in the opinion of many- the best recording of this set of four opera's is the first ever complete recording by DECCA, under Sir Georg Solti. As a new service you can buy this 14 CD set right from this site. Choose to buy from Amazon.com (US) or Amazon.co.uk (UK) by clicking the link of your choice.
<
The first complete Ring des Nibelungen on DVD has appeared too now. It is a 7 DVD set (if you buy it at Amazon.com you will get a Region 1 version only! For Region 2 click the link to Amazon.co.uk below). It is the TV registration from the famous Pierre Boulez (conductor) - Patrice Chreau (director) of a Bayreuth performance in the late seventies. The video quality is not as good as we are familiar with now on DVD. The sound quality is good, however. The performance is very good. It was the first complete RING on DVD.
A more modern version, and at the same time more conform to the ideas of Wagner is the one conducted by James Levine. The sound is DTS, so the best there is. And the performance is really fantastic.
***
And if you are somebody who loves the music of Richard Wagner, you will probably also love the music -in particular the opera's- of Richard Strauss. The most extensive site about him is by David Meek. Go to his Richard Strauss Page. A further site about this Master, that tells us it is still under construction, is Richard Srauss.com.
If you are a Richard Strauss
admirer, you might want to buy a richly illustrated book by Kurt
Wilhelm
(now translated into English) about the life of Richard Strauss, seen
from within his family life, with many photo's from his personal photo
albums, called "Richard Strauss, An Intimate Portrait".
Or you might want to buy a CD-box (9 disks)
with all the major orchestral works by Richard Strauss,
conducted by Rudolf Kempe, well-known for his
Strauss conducting.
***
Or are you by any means an admirer of the Kings of English Operetta? Then visit the Gilbert and Sullivan Archive Homepage. I can hardly imagine that there is anything to know about these Masters that cannot be found on this site! It includes some complete "Web Opera's". MIDI files of all the music, plus the complete libretto of the operetta in question. But apart from that all possible information about the Masters and their works.
***
And talking about opera: In the
Operabase you can find the schedules of many Opera Houses
around the World. Have your pick and enjoy the music!
Some contemporary composers, like Sir Peter
Maxwell Davies
have their own website. Take a look there and listen to his music in Real Audio
.
***
Now you have downloaded Real Player anyway, go to the Audionet Jukebox. There you can find many Real Audio files. Take your pick. If you can't make your choice, choose one of the Chinese Classical CD's from Sunrise Records (they are under "Classical"). You probably never heard them and, well, they deserve better.
***
Another link to a contemporary composer goes to Fabrizio Ferrari, who places musical scores of his compositions for free download on his site. You can hear MIDI simulations of these compositions before you download the sheet music. I find this a highly sympathetic idea! That is why I place this link to his site.
***
I am a great admirer of Carl Orff, who did not only write the very well known "Carmina Burana" but also the attractive opera's "Die Kluge" and "Der Mond". The best website I found about him so far is the site of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association
For every genealogist there is one
page that should be bookmarked anyway: Cyndi's
List.
You will find all the links there you could imagine. And you
can
enter your name for a free subscription for messages about updates
***
Another "must" for every genealogist is the site where you can search the database of the Mormons (LDS Church). It was opened in April 1999 and contains millions of entries now.
***
For my Dutch visitors I should also mention the extensive site of the "Centraal Bureau voor de Genealogie". The Message Board on their site -however- is also interesting for foreign visitors.
***
You should not overlook the site of Rootsweb when you are gathering genealogical information. You find many databases there and besides that you can subscribe to a large collection of "Mailing Lists" through this site.
Digital Photography / Sony
Mavica and Cybershot
In August 1998 I became the proud owner of a Sony Mavica FD71 digital camera. It works as easy as you could wish, because it records the images on a normal floppy. Floppy out of the camera and into the computer and there are your results. Magnificent! Meanwhile megapixel cameras have appeared and my Mavica (0.3 megapixel) is becoming outdated. Now I use a Sony Cybershot DSC717,also not the most modern camera any more.
***
First of all visit Sony's website. Click om Digital imaging and see what the latest models are.
***
By following the above link you will be brought to the site of Curtin's Short Courses in Digital Photography. Several complete books about digital photography, for you to read, to print or to download. Plus many links to other digital photography resources.
***
You can get all your information you want about the
Sony Mavica and Cybershot
cameras and everything related to them from the Mavica
Information Exchange Message Board. A very busy Mesage Board!
It is better than a newsgroup, because pictures can also be posted to
the Board.
If you wish you can even buy a Sony camera right now, from this site! You will be redirected to the site of
Amazon.com.
They will be responsible for the further transaction. You can trust,
however, that they will do it to your satisfaction. (Please let me know
if they don't!)
Assaid, I have used the MVC-FD 71 in the beginning of the "digital" period for most pictures on this site.
That camera is still available, but only second-hand I believe.
The Sony Cybershot DSC F717, a 5 megapixel camera that writes on a memorystick, also is not really the most modern one, but still available and "still going strong".
Now, if I would buy a new camara, I would probably choose the Sony Cybershot DSCW170 or the slightly more modest Cybershot DSCW120.

Click on the above logo to read about -or better join- the SETI Project,
meaning Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence.
You download a screensaver and a package of data. While the screensaver
is working (so when your computer is idle anyway) your processor
carries out calculations on the data. When your package of date is
finished, it is uploaded to SETI again and a new
package is
downloaded. If you participate, there is a (small) chance that
extraterrestrial life will be found on YOUR computer!
This will
make you famous of course. But the real reason to participate should be
to supply your idle processor time for a scientific purpose.
Although most of the links in this category can be found in our Internet Portal, we find this category so important that some are repeated here.
In the first place there is the World Wildlife Fund, that supports all animals that are threatened with extinction. You can apply for a Panda Passport to keep your on-line donations organized.
***
As we are extremely concerned about our nearest relatives, the Great Apes, we give some links to organizations that are concerned about them:
The Balikpapan Orangutan Survival Foundation, that tries to save the beautiful "red apes", the Orangutans, literally "men from the forest".
***
Then there is the Wild
Animal Rescue
Foundation of Thailand,
that protects the Wildlife of Thailand where possible. This
Organization is 100% operated by volunteers, who have to pay for their
own expenses and do not get any money. All the money donated goes to
the Foundation. Guaranteed!
Special attention is given to the White-handed
Gibbon, one
of the most beautiful apes on this planet. We would be ashamed to live
here if the gibbons were to disappear out of selfishness of the humans!
***
You also should visit and sponsor the Great Ape Project and become
A Supporter Of The Great Ape Project
if you really want to give the Great Apes the rights and the protection they deserve!
There are many good news sites on the Web. News is Free displays them as "channels". If you go to the site, you will see all the headlines arranged by channels. If you register, you can select the channels you are interested in. I advise to do so, because there are hundreds of "channels" (among them the the Thailand news page of this site.
